How should Christians respond to the rise of political violence in our culture?
This is no small concern. It threatens the stability of our republic and the safety of our communities. What we’re witnessing is more than partisan tension—we are reaping the seeds of unrighteous anger. This has grown into open hostility, a sign of a rising secular culture and a deeper moral and spiritual decline eroding the foundation of our society and the republic we love.
Recent years have seen a disturbing pattern: three assassination attempts on President Donald Trump, the execution of Charlie Kirk, shootings, firebombings, the Congressional baseball game shooting, the murder of healthcare CEO Brian Thompson, the Molotov cocktail attack in Colorado—directed at participants of a solidarity walk for Israeli hostages, the two state lawmakers that were fatally shot in Minnesota, firebombing of the Governor’s Mansion in Pennsylvania, and the two Israeli Embassy staff members who were killed at the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington D.C. are among the incidents that come to mind.
At the same time, threats against members of Congress have surged by 58 percent, and assaults on federal officers have seen a 1,150% increase in assaults on ICE agents. Lawlessness is increasingly excused or minimized by activists, politicians, and media voices, further emboldening violence.
So how should Christians respond?
Scripture is clear: we are not to repay evil for evil, but to overcome evil with good (1 Peter 3:9). Jesus commands us in Luke 6:27-28:
“Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.”
This isn’t limited to personal insults. This directive extends even to those who would harm us physically. Jesus goes further, calling us to humility and restraint, even in the face of aggression, telling us to “turn the other check.” How much more, then, should this apply to our political opponents, especially when combined with the mandate in 1 Timothy 2:1-2 for believers to offer up:
prayers, petitions and thanksgivings, be made on behalf of all men, for kings and all who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity. [Emphasis added.]
And Christ Himself set the ultimate example—while suffering on the cross, He prayed:
“Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.”
This is the biblical standard we are called to. It is not natural—it is supernatural. And it can only be lived out through the strength of the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 3:16).
PLEASE PRAY:
- For Repentance. That the hand of God and the conviction of the Holy Spirit would sweep through our state and nation and that we would respond in humility and honest contriteness.
For the sorrow that is according to the will of God produces a repentance without regret, leading to salvation, but the sorrow of the world produces death. (2 Corinthians 7:10)
- For Revival. We must humbly turn to God, forsake wickedness, and seek His forgiveness. As we pray, confess our sins, and pursue His righteousness, revival can take root—transforming families, renewing churches, and strengthening communities by the power of His Spirit.
- For Righteousness. Pray that truth and biblical morality rise in every city and let justice flow like a river. May we turn back to God as a nation and glorify His Name in all we do.
- For Children and Grandchildren. Pray that young people would awaken to know and love Jesus Christ and commit to living boldly for Him. Pray that they would be protected from worldly influences and be strengthened by the Word. May God fill them with passion, purity, and courage to stand firm in their faith.
- For Church Leaders. Pray that God would grant them a hunger and thirst for His Word leading to wisdom, discernment, and courage to boldly teach the entire counsel of God. Pray that God would protect them from pride and temptation and surround them with godly counsel. Pray that their leadership would foster an atmosphere where revival can flourish and God’s people can grow. May they be used to lead lost sheep back to the Shepherd with integrity and boldness.
- For Marriage and Family. Pray that a biblical view of marriage and a love for children would sweep through Christians families. May God restore an understanding of the importance of sacrificial love, unity and purpose in every household.
- For the Executive Branch. Pray for God’s hand of protection over the physical, spiritual and emotional wellbeing of those in the executive branch of government: Donald Trump, JD Vance, JB Pritzker, Juliana Stratton and their cabinet members.
- For the Legislative Branch. Pray for all those the elected officials in the legislative branch of government, specifically Michael Johnson, John Thune, Chris Welch, and Don Harmon.
- For the Judicial Branch. Pray for the judges and justices serving in the judicial branch of government and their staff members. This includes the nine members of the U.S. Supreme Court and the seven members of the Illinois Supreme Court.
- For Our Troops. Pray for God’s hand of protection over the men and women who serve our nation in uniform. May God grant them courage, strength, and safety. May God go before them in every assignment. May He bless their sacrifices and bring them home safely.
- For Local Government: For God’s divine protection over our law enforcement officials and for the federal agents who are working to enforce immigration laws.
- Moral Clarity. Pray that the Lord would restore moral clarity in our nation, remove confusion, deception, and sinful compromise. Pray that truth would prevail over lies and righteousness over rebellion. Pray that the eyes of our people would discern right from wrong. Pray that God would lead us back to His standards so our nation can thrive for His glory.
- For Election Integrity. Pray that fraud and abuse in our elections would be exposed and stopped.
- Abortion. That the Lord would dismantle all efforts to further expand access to abortion in Illinois and throughout the United States.
- Sanctity of Life. That the Lord would bless the pregnancy resource centers that are serving various communities in Illinois and throughout the nation.
For IFI:
- Pray for God’s hand of protection and for the health of all members of the IFI staff and board of directors.
- Pray that God would provide the resources we need to uphold truth in the public square.
- Pray that our efforts would be multiplied and amplified for His glory.
Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication
with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.
And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension,
will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
