The good news is that many very bad bills have not passed either chamber. The bad news is that some have passed.

Interestingly, there are a couple of bills that passed but have not yet been assigned to a committee, so at this time, we aren’t listing them. But we’ll continue to watch them closely and let you know as soon as we see movement.

Below are bills that have passed in the chamber from which they originated, have been assigned to a hearing, and need to be stopped as they move forward. This Friday is the deadline to move them out of committee.

Please take the time to file witness slips in OPPOSITION to these bills and contact the appropriate lawmaker, urging a NO vote.

HB 5507 allows for a judicial order (“finding of fact”) for someone who came from a different state or country but now resides in Illinois to petition the issuing jurisdiction to change their gender on their birth certificate.

SB 2872 require public schools to teach children “relaxation activities to enhance the mental and physical health of students” at least once a week. These techniques include, but are not limited to, mindful-based movements, yoga, breathing, meditation, and guided relaxation and may take place in a social-emotional learning class. Many of these activities are religious traditions of Buddhism, Jainism, and Hindu Darshana (a deity or philosophy) which involve asana (poses), moves such as mudra (hand gestures) and pranayama (breathing discipline).

The Illinois House Elementary & Secondary Education Committee hearing is scheduled for Wednesday, May 1 at 9 AM.

SB 2644 establishes an electronic registry for POLST forms, which state a person’s wishes for end-of-life care. (IFI suspects this move might be in preparation for physician-assisted suicide, SB 3499, which we strongly oppose. When it comes to end-of-life care, we believe it’s in the best interest of a patient to keep his written end-of-life wishes among his close family members, especially the one he has chosen to be his health care power of attorney, and not be made available in a statewide registry.)

The Illinois House Public Health Committee is scheduled for Thursday, May 2 at 9 AM.
