Will the FDA Finally Acknowledge the Harms of Mifepristone?

Early this month, the Ethics and Public Policy Center (EPPC) released a statement regarding the FDA’s role in the distribution of Mifepristone, the abortion drug.

For the past year, the pro-life community has been calling on the FDA to revoke Mifepristone from the market.

In an April study, the EPPC published the largest abortion drug study and the findings were shocking:

  • 1 in 10 (10.93%) women will experience an adverse health event after taking mifepristone.
  • The adverse health event rate is 22 times higher than what is acknowledged by the FDA.
  • The adverse health event rate became worse after the Biden Administration removed the requirement for an in-person doctor assessment.

The adverse health events that were found were the following:

  • Sepsis (0.10%),
  • Infection (1.34%),
  • Transfusion (0.15%),
  • Hemorrhage (3.31%),
  • Hospitalization related to the abortion (0.66%),
  • ER visit related to the abortion (4.73%),
  • Ectopic pregnancy (0.35%),
  • Other life-threatening events such as cardiac, pulmonary, thrombosis, anaphylaxis, surgery (0.22%),
  • Repeated surgical abortion (2.84%), and
  • Other complications (5.68%).

In their recent statement, the EPPC announced that the FDA may be finally taking the research that the EPPC has conducted, seriously.

So seriously, in fact, that the FDA has “decided to conduct a review of the safety of this drug.”

This is very good news.

If the FDA finds similar findings to the EPPC, it is very possible and even likely that the FDA will finally take the step that the pro-life community has been calling for: to take Mifepristone off of the market and out of the hands of women.

Not only does the abortion drug kill an innocent human being made in the image of God, it significantly harms the woman physically and mentally.

A study in 2006 conducted by D.M. Fergusson, J. Horwood, and E.M. Ridder found the following:

“27% of women who aborted reported experiencing suicidal ideation. This effect was significant at the >.001 level, meaning there was only a 1 in 1000 chance that the result was due to chance. The risk was 4 times greater for women who aborted compared to never pregnant women and more than 3 times greater than women who delivered.”

The research is clear. The abortion drug, Mifepristone, should be illegal.
