We’re in a curious position in this twisted world of ours. It’s like we’ve burned down the baseboards of our house, and then we realized that the rest of the house doesn’t match the charred and disintegrating baseboards.

The next generation of culture warriors hope to make a difference and they are an answer to our prayers. We hope to encourage and mentor these young contributors so they can take the baton from us in the future. God’s gift of liberty and self-government must be fought for and protected. The fundamental principles of faith, virtue, marriage and family must be upheld and taught. Please pray for these bold young culture warriors and extend to them some grace as they hone their skills.

It’s too inconvenient to replace the baseboards so that they match the rest of the house. So we’ve promptly started burning down the rest of the house to match the burned-up baseboards.

Many in today’s world have made a conscious choice to exalt ourselves as the sole determiners of our existence and meaning in life. This affects every area of life, but it especially seems to be drilling down on our sexuality.

Because we are in charge, we can have sex with whomever we want. We’ve burned down God’s created design for the most intimate of human relations.

But wait, sex implies children. And of course, children imply a loving family of one man and one woman bound together in wedlock.

But now, that really doesn’t match the charred sexual norms we’ve created for ourselves, because that means that sex can’t be outside of marriage and that it has to be between a man and a woman. So let’s burn down the rest of society to match—enter abortion and the movement for “fertility equality.”

There’s much to be said about how these are immoral on their face, but there’s also much to be said about their impact on the children. For all our fussing about the rights of the adults, we’ve turned children into commodities.

Commodification #1: Abortion

We think Hitler was evil because he killed 6 million Jews. But at least 63 million children have been slaughtered by abortion since 1973, and the tally increases every year. Many in our country celebrate barbarisms that make Ancient Rome or Nazi Germany look like child’s play, all the while euphemizing them under the ever-atoning whitewash of “personal choice.”

We are a country that prides itself on equal opportunity for all as long as you’ve made it out of the womb. But watch out if you’re on the wrong side of the uterine wall.

It’s shockingly odd that we—the most scientifically advanced civilization ever—ignore basic biology in order to justify child-murder. And we—quite possibly the most oppression-conscious culture ever—ignore the screams of the voiceless victims in order to avoid the screams of the oppressors.

The cultural acceptance of abortion wreaks havoc on our cultural treatment of children. They are treated like a commodity: The prevalence of abortion tells people who have kids that they can get rid of them as they please. After all, they may hinder your career. They may burden your finances. They may place undue stigma upon you.

Never mind that they’re human just like you.

Commodification #2: The push for “fertility equality”

God’s created design is too self-reinforcing for us to just corrupt only one part and leave the rest intact. We decided that we didn’t want to be confined into only marrying the opposite sex.

So we accepted and legalized homosexual “marriage.” But then we realized there is a problem—marriage usually comes with children, but two of the same sex cannot produce any. So in order for homosexuality to be “real marriage,” we ought to be able to get our hands on some real children to complete the picture, right?

Enter laws like California’s proposed fertility bill and organizations like Men Having Babies. A look at MHB’s website home page tells it all: a graphic that equates a woman (with a baby) to two men (with a baby) to a man and a woman (with a baby). After all, this group fights to fulfill “the anguish and yearning that same sex couples and singles feel due to their inability to reproduce without medical intervention.”

Now, there’s something really curious here—amidst all this squawking about how adults violating the created order can’t receive the benefits of it, where is there any mention of the best interest of the children?

Let’s ask ourselves one quick question: of all those family permutations MHB is proud to proclaim, in which one is the child growing up in the family structure that God intended?

The family structure is intended to consist of a mother and father who are both biologically related to their children. (And yes, adoption has a wonderful purpose and place—after all, we have all been adopted by the Lord, Romans 8:15—but it almost always occurs to remedy some previous non-ideal situation, such as death of biological parents, childbearing out of wedlock, etc.

Adoption is not a workaround to graft kids into “family structures” that were not designed to produce them in the first place or care for them as God intended.) The biological, heterosexual family is the natural context for a child as he grows up; he not only receives the complementary nurturing that a mother-father pair provides, but grows up knowing who his blood relatives are and understanding his ancestry and place in family history.

So a blatant workaround like obtaining babies through surrogacy destroys the context in which a child is intended to grow up.

They allow adults who reject the sexual order to shell out money and artificially conceive kids, who will then grow up isolated from the biological bonds the family was intended to have and from the mother-father structure that is vital for them to be nurtured properly.

It’s hard to say that a kid truly “belongs” anywhere when the strongest bonds he could have are severed at the very beginning of his life and he becomes a manipulatable, atomized individual purchased by someone else who’s doing his best to ignore God’s design.

Contrasted with abortion, this is the opposite form of the commodification of children: while abortion says that people who have kids can dispose of them as they please, the homosexuality–surrogacy combination says that people who ought not to have kids can acquire them as they please.
