Now more than ever, Christians must contend for the institutions of marriage and family. Forecasts that 1 in 3 young adults in the U.S. today will never marry signify a closing of the “American heart.” The average age for first marriages in the U.S. keeps going up. The latest data we’ve seen puts the current age at 30 for men and 28 for women. In 1990, it was 26 for men and 23 for women. Rewind a few more decades to 1960, and it was 22 for men and 20 for women.
For decades now, our culture has downplayed the importance of marriage and family. According to an article published by the Institute for Family Studies, only 60 percent of American adults think it’s important for unmarried couples to legally marry if they have a child. It’s becoming more and more acceptable to bring children into the world absent the natural context in which God intended them to be nurtured.
As Dr. Wilcox suggests, it is time that Christians “defy the elites, forge strong families, and save civilization!”
When we get marriage and family right, we glorify God and experience human flourishing. There are great blessings when we follow God’s plan for marriage and family. God has shown us what is right and good. We turn our backs on it to our detriment.
