No other book has been attacked as the Bible has. Repeatedly throughout history skeptics have set out to discredit it and to knock it off its pedestal as the most highly regarded book ever written, but they have all failed.

If you are reading this article, it is likely that you stand with God in defense of the unborn. You hate the slaughter of little ones in the womb, and desire that the nation would return to loving children as we once did.

If you are a Christian or a conservative, you are probably more optimistic than you were a year ago. Is it because Donald Trump won the election? Maybe, but his victory is only a symptom of something I believe is more significant: an important shift in the thinking of many Americans.

Many years ago, a disguised Mafia “hitman” was interviewed on national TV. He was asked a variety of questions but the one that stood out in my mind was how he dealt with his conscience. His laconic response was, “What’s a conscience?”

Because people do not immediately suffer the just consequences of their evil actions, most will continue in their wickedness! All claims that people are fundamentally good are proven false by this reality.

I heard of a man who was tired of having gasoline stolen from his garage, so he poured sugar into his gas can and waited. Sure enough, a few days later he heard there was a young man from the neighborhood looking for a new engine. Gasoline engines are not designed to burn sugar!

We are all infected from birth with an insatiable desire to be somebody. Even shyness is but an ironic twist on that desire. The Scriptures call it “the pride of life,” and names it as one of three categories under which all sins fall. Our hunger to be recognized or known colors everything we do.

A sad commentary on American culture is its confusion regarding love, to the point that love has been flipped on its head to become its opposite! Today, if you genuinely love, you will probably be called a hater, and many will declare that you are loving when what you say and do is actually destructive and deadly!

The atheistic Left began their assault on America over seventy years ago. Their progress was quite slow in the beginning, and one must give them credit for their determination. They have not quit to this day! A principal actor in this effort has been the Communist Party USA, but it is only one of numerous Leftist groups seeking to divide and destroy this great nation (They all lean Marxist).

It is quite unfortunate that the most important date on the Christian calendar is misnamed! While of uncertain origin, the best guesses are that the title “Easter” is derived from a pagan religion, but that is a subject for another time. My point is, however, that the name gives no indication of the reason for the holiday in the first place, which is to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Most Americans see the date as a time for easter egg hunts or to enjoy Spring.

Every American citizen has, among other things, the right and responsibility to vote. If too many fail to take this responsibility seriously, it allows for a few, with bad intentions, to transform the state into an oligarchy or dictatorship!

America is divided, but you already knew that. There is no place for coming together in many of its disagreements. The differences are polar opposites, and neither side is willing to yield ground. This presents a very serious, if not existential, threat to the nation. Abraham Lincoln, quoting Jesus Christ noted that, “A nation divided against itself cannot stand.”

In my last article I addressed the reality that many born-again Christians have been thinking and acting too much like the non-Christians around them. I pointed out particularly the willingness of so many to lie, or misrepresent the facts, when it appeared to benefit them. Sadly, abandoning truthfulness is not the only similarity between many of God’s people and the world.

If there is one thing that our cultural leaders are not very earnest about anymore, it is marriage. There is much ado made about dating and the wedding ceremony itself, but how to succeed in marriage itself is given little attention. Statistics indicate that approximately half of marriages end in divorce. This is more than scandalous, it is destructive to the nation and dreadfully harmful to children, to say nothing about how God vies such things!

“Amazing grace! how sweet the sound-that saved a wretch like me! I once was lost but now am found. . . .” These opening words from John Newton’s famous gospel song acknowledge the reality of our lost condition without Jesus Christ.
