“Highest Property Taxes in the Country”: Illinois Lawmakers Push for Relief

Families across the state of Illinois are being squeezed by perpetually increasing property taxes on their homes and businesses.

For years, taxpayers have sounded the alarm. Now even Governor JB Pritzker admits Illinois has a serious property tax problem.

Recognizing this critical problem is not enough. Real relief requires immediate action and serious reform.

The Truth Behind Rising Property Taxes

Springfield politicians often blame local governments. But that’s only half the story.

State decisions drive local costs:

  • Illinois relies heavily on property taxes to fund education, forcing communities to shoulder the burden.
  • When the state underfunds schools or imposes costly mandates, local governments must raise taxes.
  • “Flat funding” from the state acts like a cut when costs rise—pushing taxes even higher.

This is not accidental. It’s a system that shifts the burden directly onto families.

Lawmakers Are Pushing Back

Some Illinois lawmakers are speaking out for those of us who are feeling the pinch. State Representatives Jennifer Sanalitro (R-Hanover Park), Nicole La Ha (R-Lemont), Dan Ugaste (R-St. Charles), and Jeff Keicher (R-Sycamore) held a press conference to highlight this concern.

Proposals include:

  • Ending backdoor tax hikes that bypass voters: Once debt or local bonds are paid off, local taxpayers should get their money back. That doesn’t happen now. HB5611 and HB5612 would fix that. Taxpayers would actually get property tax relief when bonds or debt is paid off, instead of the current “rolling over” by local taxing bodies of all of that money into more spending and more debt.
  • Requiring referendums on high-turnout ballots: Local taxing bodies like schools and municipalities should have to go to local voters for approval to raise taxes. HB4523 would provide for that.
  • Ensuring major projects include real property tax relief: HB 9 would directly provide for $3.5 billion in tax relief statewide – that’s real property tax relief for the average homeowner. Or maybe, just maybe, Illinois should just institute property tax caps like Indiana just did.

It’s obvious now. Hardworking families cannot continue to carry this load. The cost of living in Illinois keeps climbing, making it harder to work, raise a family, and make ends meet. Young families are priced out of the housing market; many families can’t pay their property tax bills on the homes they do have; and seniors on a fixed income can’t afford to live in homes they bought 40 years ago.

Instead, the General Assembly and Governor Pritzker are considering decreasing the Local Government Distributive Fund (LDGF) by $60 million to save the state money. That means local governments have to come up with $60 million to fund current fire and police and other services. Where are they going to get that money? From local homeowners. The last thing we need is another spike in property taxes that feeds unsatiable and unaccountable government.

On Tax Day, Republican lawmakers acknowledged these pressures and introduced another package of proposals aimed at providing relief. These proposals recognize a real problem: families are under financial pressure.

The question is whether Springfield is willing to go far enough. Small fixes may help at the margins, but without broader reforms that address the overall cost of living, many Illinois families will continue to struggle.

If Illinois is serious about keeping families here—and helping them thrive—lawmakers must move beyond incremental relief and pursue policies that truly make this state more affordable to live and work.

A National “Rebellion” Is Growing

This isn’t just an Illinois problem.

Across the country, Americans are pushing back against rising property taxes—what some are calling a “property tax rebellion.”

Families are asking a simple question:

Can we even afford to stay in our homes?

Take ACTION: Click HERE to contact Governor Pritzker, your state senator and your state representative to tell them you’ve had enough. Kindly, but firmly demand real property tax relief and accountability for policies that drive up local costs.

It’s time for real property tax relief, smaller and more responsible government, and serious reforms that bring accountability to bloated government spending. Contact Sprinfield lawmakers and tell them Illinois families cannot continue carrying this burden.
