When the U.S. Supreme Court decided favorably in the case of Obergefell v. Hodges in 2015, it was celebrated as a win for adult equality.

Their decision guaranteed the “fundamental right” of same-sex couples to “marry.”

In reality, this ruling caused inequality for children, When marriage was redefined, parenthood law was also redefined.

Instead of a child having the basic right to their biological mother and father, mothers and fathers became optional based on the sexual desires of adults.

If two men desired a baby, they had a “right” to have one – never mind the devastation that occurs when children are deprived of their mothers and vice versa. The desires of adults were more important, according to the Court’s flawed decision.

In addition, “infertility” has also been re-engineered to fit a more “inclusive” framework.

Traditionally, a heterosexual couple was considered to be struggling with infertility if they had been trying to have a baby for over a year with no success.

Now, if two women or two men desire to have a baby and cannot (because of this annoying thing called biology), they are also considered “infertile” and their IVF treatments can be covered by insurance.

Once again depriving a child of either their biological father or biological mother – both of which endanger the child emotionally, spiritually, and yes – physically.

Research reveals quite clearly and loudly that the safest place for a child is with their biological married mother and father.

Consider the Zulock Case from 2024. William and Zachary Zulock, a “married” gay couple, were both sentenced to 100 years in prison without parole for sexually abusing their adopted 9 and 11 year-old sons.

Not only did the boys endure horrific abuse, but the “parents” recorded the content and shared it with others – causing authorities to describe these boys’ experiences as living in a “house of horrors.”

Or consider the Illinois Foster Parent Data which found that 34% of perpetrators in child abuse cases are same-sex couples.

In addition to this, a study published in Social Science Research shows that children of same-sex “parents” are more likely to report a history of childhood abuse.

The research is clear. Obergefell directly harms and endangers children’s mental and physical well-being.

Katy Faust, an outspoken advocate of children’s’ rights and founder of the organization, Them Before Us, launched a new campaign focused on overturning the Obergefell decision.

This campaign is named “Greater Than” because the welfare of children is greater than the sexual desires of adults.

“Every child deserves a mother and a father, protection, and a chance to thrive.”

If we, as Christians, truly believe in the sexual ethics that God encoded for our world – of marriage being between one man and one woman (Gen. 2:24), of parenting designed for a married heterosexual couple (Eph. 6:1-4), and the infinite value that children bring (Ps. 127:3) – then we have the duty to stand with this campaign.

Obergefell must be overturned.

The welfare and safety of children depend on it.
