The General Assembly is scheduled to adjourn on May 24th, so our state lawmakers are in Springfield five days a week instead of three in order to pass their bills. Some of these proposals are still making their way through the process. Your emails and calls are critically important. Please don’t give up!

Let us not become weary in doing good,
for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.

BILLS TO OPPOSE

HB 5239 is a heinous bill that facilitates the trafficking of minors and protects their sexual perpetrators by prohibiting the state from cooperating with another state seeking to impose civil or criminal liability on out-of-staters seeking an abortion. The bill specifically refers to “reproductive health care products or services that are lawful in Illinois.” In Illinois, young girls can get an abortion without their parent’s knowledge when the Parental Notice of Abortion Law was repealed.

HB 5239 is scheduled for a hearing on Wednesday, May 8 at 2 PM in the Senate Executive Committee.

HB 5507 allows Illinoisans to go to court to get a “finding of fact” in order to obtain documentation to change their gender on their birth certificate from another state or country.

SB 2872 allows public schools to teach children “relaxation activities to enhance the mental and physical health of students” at least once a week. These techniques may “include, but are not limited to, mindful-based movements, yoga, stretching, meditation, breathing exercises, guided relaxation techniques, quiet time, walking, in-person conversation, and other stress-relieving activities,” and may take place in a social-emotional learning class. Many of these activities are religious traditions of Buddhism, Jainism, and Hindu Darshana.

Just last week, a court ruled in favor of a student who sued the Chicago Public School District for forcing her to participate in what was dubbed “quiet time.” Class action status was also granted for other students to sue.

SB 2644 establishes an electronic registry for POLST forms, which state a person’s wishes for end of life care. (IFI suspects this move is in preparation for physician-assisted suicide, which has been introduced in the General Assembly. We believe it’s in the best interest of a patient to keep his written end of life wishes among his close family members, especially the one he has chosen to be his health care power of attorney, and not to be made available in a statewide registry.)
