Virtually all American citizens (and many around the world) will remember September 11th, 2001. We usually just refer to it as “9/11.” That is the day when foreign born haters of our nation used our own commercial jet aircraft to take down the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City. And heavily damaged the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.
A fourth aircraft was commandeered with the intent of a possible attack on another building in our nation’s capital. Perhaps the White House. Or the Capitol building itself.
Didn’t happen. Several bold passengers rushed the cabin and were able to interrupt the evil intentions of the terrorists. There were deadly consequences as the jet was taken down in a western Pennsylvania field, leaving no survivors.
We learned that the terrorists involved were disciples of Osama Bin Laden. This man was raised in Sunni Islam by his wealthy family in Saudi Arabia. He was the founder and first general emir of the terrorist group al-Qaeda from 1988 until his death in 2011.
His life mission can be determined from a series of statements found notably in the 1996 bayan and the 1998 fatwa. Bin Laden called for jihad to “protect the Muslim community from aggression” particularly when peaceful efforts failed. The 1998 fatwa, in particular, advocated for violence against Americans and their allies. It stated the duty of Muslims was to act against what he termed a war on Islam.
The events of 9/11 radically shook the American public. Patriotism soared. Even Congress united—for a short time. Spiritual interest came alive. But the deeper American awareness of “who is our real unseen enemy” was never fully explored.
Charlie Kirk was one of the voices who raised the question of Islamic intentions about life in America. He said,
“Islam has conquest values. They seek to take over land and territory, and Europe is now a conquered continent.”
But in America? Media Matters reported,
“Muslims in Texas are looking to build their own epic city…The East Plano Islamic Center, deep in the heart of Texas. It’s in the northeast suburbs of Dallas. Mohammedans plan to build a 402 acre community in the Dallas suburbs. (For reference, that’s about four times the size of Disneyland.) It would have over 1,000 homes, a K-12 school, a college, retail stores, and, of course, a mosque.”
The developers claim the area will be “open to all.” Will it? Is that reality in other Muslim communities?
Recent elections in several states and New York City reveal the significant growth of Islamic influence. Mosques are steadily increasing. Political offices are being sought well beyond the Mamdani win in New York City. Including here in Illinois.
How we respond to this influx in a country that values and promotes religious freedom will be an interesting test on our Constitution. The important question is whether we can actually address such concerns openly. Actions that might dampen or ignore our historic American values.
As mentioned, one such person willing to take on such questions was Charlie Kirk through his organization, Turning Point USA. For Kirk, from Illinois, it all began in May, 2012. The 18-year-old Kirk gave a speech at Benedictine University‘s Youth Government Day in Lisle, Illinois.
A retired marketing entrepreneur and Tea Party activist named Bill Montgomery was present. He encouraged Charlie to postpone college and engage full-time in his political activism. A month after Kirk graduated from high school, Turning Point USA was launched.
Charlie Kirk was an incredible influencer. He discussed issues of faith, spiritual values, government, and politics with all comers. He was highly winsome and skilled at oratory and debate.
In other words, Charlie was a real threat to his opponents.
We know what happened to our nation on 9/11. Let us also never forget what happened on September 10, 2025. That was the day Charlie Kirk was assassinated by a broken soul unwilling to discuss his beliefs with Charlie.
Charlie Kirk was aware of the threats to the cause of Christ. Are we?
Jesus said,
