For over 20 years, Bill Maher has hosted the show “Real Time with Bill Maher” on HBO.

Recently, Maher was joined by Piers Morgan and Gillian Tett, a columnist for the Financial Times, to discuss the topic of abortion. In the clip, Morgan stated that Donald Trump’s recently articulated compromise on abortion is not that different from European countries.

Tett added that she believes American efforts to restrict abortion are crazy when our nation is facing other problems.

It was Maher who spoke most honestly about the Left’s support for abortion. He stated that he respects those who take a strong, absolutist position on the issue.

Indeed, those of us who are pro-life oppose abortion not because we hate women, but because we believe abortion is murder. Maher agreed with our take, but then coldly declared without hesitation,

“I’m just okay with that. I am. There’s eight billion people in the world. I’m sorry, we won’t miss you. That’s my position on that.”

Interestingly, both Morgan and Tett were obviously uncomfortable with Maher’s honesty. Morgan tried to suggest that Maher just doesn’t like children, but the reality is Morgan and Tett believe the same thing; they just don’t want to be frank about it.

Radio hosts Eric Harley and Gary McNamara on their show pointed out that pro-abortion groups had nothing to say in response to Maher’s position.

What is there to say? Abortion is the unjust taking of a human life, i.e. murder. And they know that’s what it is, too.

Consider several points of further reflection on this issue.

Bill Maher was honest, but his honesty does not excuse the cruelty of his position. Believing that there is ethically nothing wrong with killing a baby simply because there are already eight billion people on earth is abhorrent.

It is this same mentality that animates all sorts of violence and genocide.

We often turn to Romans 1 for wisdom on sexual immorality. Verses 18-32 contain one of the most powerful descriptions of the wrath of God coming upon men because of their ungodliness and unrighteousness.

But this passage does not just describe the abomination of sexual perversion but also speaks of murder, strife, deceit, and evil-mindedness, just to name a few of the categories the Apostle Paul mentions.

God gives people over to a debased mind to do and think these things. In the same way, Bill Maher might be honest, but he has a debased mind.

In his rebellion against God, he has been given over to wickedness.

This does not mean Bill Maher is beyond redemption. Made in the image of God, he desperately needs the grace of God so that he can be given a new mind and heart in place of his debased mind and heart. We should pray to this end rather than simply condemn him.

Maher’s comments should be a jolt to Christians, especially if we are tempted to ignore social issues in pursuit of other political ends. Maher’s honesty should encourage us to be equally honest on this subject, which means we cannot compromise or seek to minimize the horrors of the killing of the unborn.

I am still very glad that Roe v. Wade was overturned, but let us not think that somehow the pro-life position has won.

The battle before us is perhaps even more intense than it was before.

We agree that it’s murder.

Let us not accept that fate for countless innocents.

May we witness and stand against this horror with every fiber of our beings. May God have mercy.
