In 1999, Jill Stanek was working as a nurse at Christ Hospital in Oaklawn. She was shocked to learn a hospital bearing the name “Christ” would perform abortions. She later learned that this hospital was performing not only “typical” abortions, but babies were also being delivered and then allowed to die, with no care being provided.
In the beginning, these babies were taken to a Soiled Utility Room to die. Later, the hospital misusing the name “Christ” established a Comfort Room, even providing a camera for families to take pictures of the baby they were allowing to die. The seeming tenderness of these provisions is truly sickening, given the reason for the death of these innocents.
Here is Jill’s testimony of a tiny baby who was given this cruel treatment.
One night, a nursing co-worker was taking a baby with Down syndrome who had been aborted alive to our Soiled Utility Room because his parents did not want to hold him, and she did not have time to hold him. I could not bear the thought of this suffering child dying alone in a Soiled Utility Room, so I cradled and rocked him for the 45 minutes that he lived. He was between 21 and 22 weeks old, weighed about ½ pound, and was about 10 inches long. He was too weak to move very much, expending any energy he had trying to breathe. Toward the end, he was so quiet I could not tell if he was still alive. I held him up to the light to see through his chest wall whether his heart was still beating. After he was pronounced dead, I folded his little arms across his chest, wrapped him in a tiny shroud, and carried him to the hospital morgue where all of our dead patients are taken.
In 2001, Jill was terminated from her position with the hospital. She believes this termination had everything to do with her raising awareness of what the hospital was allowing in the name of medical care. Jill did not leave quietly. She brought awareness to the cruelty of what was taking place.
Thankfully, Congress did take some action. The Born-Alive Infants Protection Act was passed by Congress and signed on August 5, 2002, by President George W. Bush. This law mandated that any baby born alive during an abortion be given appropriate medical attention. Imagine having to pass a law that says healthcare providers must give medical care to a helpless baby.
We give thanks for this law; however, there were problems with the legislation. For one thing, no penalties were prescribed for wicked institutions that persisted in failing to provide care for babies who survived an abortion.
For that reason and others, a new bill, The Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act (BAASPA), was written and has been introduced to the last 6 congresses (114th – 119th).
Lifesite News gives a good summary of the purpose of this legislation.
BAASPA would mandate that abortion-surviving newborns be shown the “same degree of professional skill, care, and diligence” as would be given following an intended birth and then be “immediately transported and admitted to a hospital.” Violating physicians would face up to five years in prison, and those who go beyond willful negligence and commit an “overt act” to kill the newborn would be punished under the existing federal murder statute.
The current U.S. House of Representatives successfully passed this legislation (H.R. 21) with the support of only one Democrats, by a vote of 217 to 204.
The Illinois Congressional Delegation voted along party lines: all 14 Democrats voted NAY, and all 3 Republicans voted YEA.
However, on January 15, 2025, a vote was taken in the U.S. Senate and, even with a Republican majority, Democrats were able to take advantage of the rules of the U.S. Senate and keep this legislation (S. 6) from advancing. The bill needed 60 votes to advance but only received 52. Predictably, our two U.S. Senators, Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth voted against providing care for babies who survive an abortion.
Doesn’t this make you angry? It should! Durbin calls the legislation a sham. If you can stomach it, you can watch his speech here.
How can our nation’s highest leaders not support legislation that would mandate care for a baby who survived an abortion? Melissa Ohden, founder of the Abortion Survivors Network, told Fox News Digital,
“We are not treated as human beings. We are simply treated as pawns in their game of political chess.”
U.S. Senators Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth, along with all the other politicians who voted against this legislation, are entirely committed to the killing of the unborn. To their thinking, nothing must be allowed to get in the way. Ideology trumps sensibility and compassion in this manifestation of deep spiritual blindness. It is disgusting. There is no justification for their wicked leadership, but this is the reality.
Righteous anger should be part of our proper response, but if it leads only to frustration and no action, then nothing will change. I hate to say this, but our two Senators don’t care what you and I think. They feel safe to vote against innocent children because they have easily won their recent elections.
We must seek to take righteous action no matter what we think the outcome will be.
First and foremost, we must be in prayer. We cannot force or manipulate God, but we can cry out before Him. He is glorified in the righteous desires and prayers of His people.
Second, even though our U.S. Senators don’t care what we think, we still must let them know. You can easily contact them HERE to let them know what you think.
Third, please share this information with others. Conservative Christians are a minority in Illinois, but we should not be a silent minority. Be a voice for those who have no voice.
