The Apostle Paul reminds us in 1 Timothy 2:1-3 that Christians are called to offer “supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks… for kings and all who are in authority” so that we may lead peaceful and quiet lives in godliness and reverence.
This command is not dependent on whether we agree with those in office. We pray for our elected officials because God commands us to pray—for wisdom, humility, righteousness, and that those entrusted with authority would govern according to His truth.
The battles we face in Illinois and across our nation are not merely political or cultural. At their root, they are spiritual. So you might say that we are called to spiritual activism or prayer activism.
Ephesians 6 reminds us:
“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood… but against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.”
Likewise, 2 Corinthians 10 teaches that “the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds.”
While we must faithfully engage in the public square, we must never believe that human strategies alone can heal what is spiritually broken. Lasting change begins when God’s people seek Him in humility, repentance, obedience, and prayer.
Illinois faces overwhelming challenges: skyrocketing abortions, human trafficking, fiscal irresponsibility, government corruption, failing schools, gender confusion and sexual immorality, attacks on God’s design for marriage and the family, threats to parental rights and religious liberty, and countless other policies that reject biblical truth.
It is hard to believe, but abortion activists actually call abortion “healthcare.” But the prophet Isaiah warned:
“Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; who put darkness for light, and light for darkness…” (Isaiah 5:20)
The challenges in our culture should drive us first to our knees.
God told His people:
“If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.” (2 Chronicles 7:14)
The church must lead the way—not merely by opposing darkness, but by walking faithfully in the light. Jesus makes the priority clear:
“Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” (Matthew 6:33)
At Illinois Family Institute, we believe our work must be rooted in God’s Word and sustained by prayer. Strategies, articles, events, and advocacy matter—but without God’s blessing, they are not enough.
That is why we invite you to join the IFI Prayer Team.
Our prayer team regularly lifts up:
• our state and communities
• elected officials and government leaders
• critical public policy issues
• IFI’s ministry needs
• opportunities for biblical truth to impact our culture
We will send timely prayer requests, important updates, and reports of answered prayer so that we can also give thanks for what God is doing.
Our God reigns. The battle belongs to Him. Our job is to be faithful.
“The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.” (James 5:16)
If you believe God hears and answers prayer, will you stand with us?
