For more than a decade, Monte Larrick has been the voice behind the Illinois Family Institute—faithfully serving as our Media Affairs Director since 2014. Before joining IFI, Monte spent three decades as a correspondent with Moody Radio, sharing stories that informed, inspired, and strengthened the body of Christ.
But Monte’s story began long before his broadcast career. Born on October 26, 1956, in Wilmington, Ohio, Monte’s friends joke that he entered the world holding a reporter’s notebook in one hand and a microphone in the other. Somewhere in his growing-up years, he also developed a lifelong love—and a real talent—for baseball. A devoted fan of the Cincinnati Reds, Monte can still recite the starting lineup from those powerhouse teams of his youth. Later, he would channel that passion into coaching the Moody Radio softball team, leading them with the same steady voice and quiet enthusiasm that marked his entire career.
Monte holds a bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Communications from Columbia College Chicago and also studied at Moody Bible Institute, where he laid the foundation for a broadcasting career that would span more than 30 years. As a senior news correspondent for Moody Radio Chicago, Monte became known for his professionalism, his calm presence, and his rare ability to balance authority with compassion. It’s no wonder he earned awards and respect from peers throughout the Christian media world.
After his “radio days,” Monte joined IFI as Media Affairs Director, where he wore more hats than most could count. He co-hosted the IFA Spotlight podcast, produced weekly radio spots and calls to action, recorded and edited video and audio content—and yes, as he’ll remind us with a grin, he even took out the garbage.
Through it all, Monte’s mission remained simple yet profound: to ensure IFI continued to be a strong, clear, and unapologetic conservative voice in today’s media culture. His deep faith and steadfast integrity have helped shape IFI’s message to tens of thousands across Illinois and beyond.
After moving to the Chicago area, Monte and his beloved wife Miriam settled in Bolingbrook, Illinois, where they raised their daughters. Miriam lovingly describes him as a devoted husband and father—faithful through every season—and yes, still faithfully taking out the garbage. Today, Monte and Miriam delight in their two grandchildren, who will now enjoy even more of his time and attention as he enters retirement.
Those who know Monte best describe him with affection and admiration:
Chris Fabry, radio host: “There was something calming and soothing about Monte’s voice. There was authority there, but also compassion—a rare mix.”
Diana Berryman, radio personality: “What I admire most about Monte is his authenticity… no act, no pretense, no nonsense—and he follows through, always. He lives his faith.”
John Hayden, former program director: “Getting the story was no problem for Monte. He had a quiet and unassuming personality and a compassionate heart.”
Mark Elfstrand, former radio host: “Monte loved long city council meetings—and then having Mayor Daley ask for his advice.”
Monte’s colleagues also know a lighter side: his love for Cincinnati chili (complete with a secret recipe he claims is worth $25), his enjoyment of swimming and reading, and his reliable skill at third base.
As IFI Executive Director Dave Smith put it:
“Monte’s goal has always been to make sure that IFI remains a strong, unapologetic, conservative voice in today’s media culture. I especially appreciate how he went over and beyond the call of duty to get the job done in a professional way. His voice, his faithfulness, and his humor will be deeply missed.”
As we bid adieu to Monte at the end of this year, it seems only fitting to close with one of his favorite signoffs:
“All the best.”
And for you, Monte—may it truly be so.
IFI honored Monte with the 2025 “Voice of Truth” Award for his faithful work.
