The dangers of social media have been well-documented in recent years.
The Cleveland Clinic records that even though most social media apps require an age minimum of 13, 40% of children between the ages of eight and 12 are currently using some type of social media.
In addition to this, it is reported that teenagers who spend more than 3 hours per day on social media double their risk of experiencing anxiety and depression.
This may explain a lot about our culture, but it is not the only danger social media poses.
One danger recently gained national and Congressional attention.
Back in 2024, The Guardian reported the following regarding Instagram and Facebook:
“Meta estimates about 100,000 children using Facebook and Instagram receive online sexual harassment each day, including ‘pictures of adult genitalia’.”
This information led New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez to file a lawsuit against Meta and Mark Zuckerberg to protect minors from sexual abuse and human trafficking via social media.
Meta, of course, denied the claims of Torrez’s lawsuit, saying:
“We want teens to have safe, age-appropriate experiences online, and we have over 30 tools to support them and their parents. We’ve spent a decade working on these issues and hiring people who have dedicated their careers to keeping young people safe and supported online.”
Eventually, this led to a Senate hearing where Mark Zuckerberg was present to testify on behalf of Meta and its online safety protocols.
He was met with something he was not prepared for.
Senator Josh Hawley from Missouri confronted Zuckerberg with the undeniable fact that underage girls are routinely targeted on Instagram specifically with unwanted sexual content and unwanted self-harm content, leading to devastating results.
Senator Hawley also revealed to Zuckerberg that sitting right behind him in the Senate hearing were the parents of the victims of Meta’s platform.
Hawley ultimately forced a sheepish apology from Zuckerberg to the families of the victims:
“I’m sorry for everything you’ve all gone through. It’s terrible. No one should have to go through the things that your families have suffered.”
