Legislative Update for the Week of May 19, 2025

As the legislative session heads into its final stretch, the atmosphere is becoming increasingly chaotic and is expected to intensify before adjournment on May 31st. This week marks the critical deadline for bills to pass out of their originating chamber, creating immense pressure to secure the necessary votes. Compounding this challenging environment is a deeply problematic budget, making this a particularly difficult time for progressives.

You’ve been making a real difference by contacting your state senators and representatives! Your ongoing calls and emails are the key to stopping several harmful bills from moving forward. The vote count is incredibly tight right now, so we need to keep the pressure on.

This is the time when calls and emails are most critical!

Click HERE for phone numbers for both your state senator and state representative.
Please make note of their contact info for the following bills and for future reference.

SB 9 – Linda Holmes (D): the vote on the bill legalizing physician-assisted suicide via lethal prescription drugs is too close to call. Therefore, progressives have also resurrected HB 1328. It’s the exact same bill, just the House version.

TAKE ACTION:   Click HERE to email both your state senator and state representative. Remind them that the medical community opposes aiding and abetting in the death of a patient. Urge a NO vote if either bill moves. Then call both your state senator and representative. Urge them to oppose physician-assisted suicide.

HB 3637 – Karina Villa (D): has already passed the House and Senate Committee. It allows doctors who have violated laws and lost their licenses in other states to come to Illinois to practice medicine. As we have said earlier, we suspect this may be their solution to SB 9, assisted suicide, and other unethical medical procedures. In states where physician-assisted suicide, abortion, transgender hormone therapy, and gender-affirming surgeries are legally restricted, it would make sense that these doctors who have no problem performing these immoral procedures would have to be imported to Illinois.

But the bill goes even further. It allows drugs that have not been approved by the FDA to be prescribed in Illinois if they have been approved by a foreign organization – the World Health Organization. We see this as a lawsuit waiting to happen. HB 3637 is up for the final vote for passage.

TAKE ACTION: Click HERE to email your state senator to oppose HB 3637. Then call your state senator.

SB 42 – Curtis Tarver (D): has already passed the Senate and House Committee. It prohibits law enforcement from stopping a vehicle based on the odor of burnt or raw cannabis if anyone in the vehicle is 21-yrs-old or over. In addition, it removes the requirement of transporting marijuana in an odor-proof container. SB 42 will put more high drivers on Illinois roads. Since a lot of marijuana is laced with fentanyl, it limits law enforcement from stopping the fentanyl crisis. Fentanyl is the number one killer of teens today!

TAKE ACTION: Click HERE to email your state representative to oppose SB 42. Then please call him/her.

SB 1560 – Lindsey LaPointe (D): has already passed the Senate and House Committee. It requires students in grades 3 – 12 to be screened for mental health problems beginning in the 2027-28 school year. With the woke indoctrination and ideology already being taught to public school students, the following concerns are valid. Who determines what mental health is? The professionals that are telling our children that they can be a boy or a girl and marry a man or a woman? What about a girl whose mental health would be affected by an out-of-wedlock pregnancy? Would the solution be abortion since parents don’t have to be notified? What happens to the child who refuses to be screened? Who has access to the results?

Furthermore, the rules and procedures are not even known at this time! And they won’t be until they are written AFTER the bill becomes law!

TAKE ACTION: Click HERE to email your state representative to oppose SB 1560. Then please call him/her.

HB 3489 – Rachel Ventura (D): has passed the House and Senate committees. It allows pharmacists to dispense “morning after” abortion pills, whether prescribed or not, as they can dispense any contraceptive. These pills act as an abortifacient to prevent the implantation of a new human life after fertilization has taken place. It also mandates that our tax dollars pay for the pills through Medicaid.
