Cultural Revolution in Illinois: A Response to Rep. Cassidy

As the spring 2025 session of the Illinois House drew to a close, State Rep. Kelly Cassidy (D-Chicago) rose to speak, exercising the right of personal privilege. In her four-minute speech, Cassidy blasted her Republican colleagues and made serious accusations against them including:

  • The demonization of trans people
  • Erasure of words that make some people uncomfortable
  • Playing the game of “fishing for Cassidy”
  • Sharing a child’s information which resulted in threats against the family
  • Being partially responsible for the suicides of approximately 21 trans youth

The final words of her tirade were,

“You have blood on your hands; you can’t erase those words.”

Rep. Cassidy speaks with anger, confidence, and boldness, in part because so much of our culture has accepted the sinful and rebellious ideas that you can change your gender and that homosexuality is equivalent to God’s design for sex and marriage. Many parents go along with these perverse ideas and, of course, our government school system constantly promotes them as well.

Over 50 years ago, R. J. Rushdoony opened his tome, The Institutes of Biblical Law, by pointing out the religious nature of law. All laws have a religious basis. When laws change, it is a reflection of religious changes.

Without intending any disrespect, I would call Rep. Cassidy a high priestess for the false religion of humanism and perversion that has overtaken key institutions in our state and nation.

Let’s consider just a few recent bills supported by Cassidy and her fellow adherents of this religion.

1] HB 217, signed by Gov. Bruce Rauner on August 20, 2015, and effective on January 1, 2016, made it illegal for licensed mental health care providers to seek to dissuade anyone under the age of 18 to turn from the sins of homosexuality or transgenderism.

2] HB 156, signed by Gov. JB Pritzker on June 29, 2021, and effective for the 2021-2022 school year, mandated that boys’ (and girls’) bathrooms that served grades 4-12 must include menstrual products.

3] HB 246, signed by Gov. JB Pritzker in August 2019 and effective July 1, 2020, mandated that all public schools covering U.S. and Illinois history include a study of the roles and contributions of self-identifying “LGBTQ” people.

These three laws, among quite a few others, show there has been a shift to normalize what God calls vile passions (Rom 1:26). There has been a legal revolution led by those like Rep. Cassidy, who is serving her fourteenth term representing the 14th House District.

Thankfully, there was some pushback to Rep. Cassidy’s speech. One House member called for Rep. Cassidy to be silenced in violation of Rule 51, a regulation on decorum. Another House member voiced strong opposition to surgical mutilation and chemical castration and pledged to stand with real women and girls when it comes to awards, trophies, and scholarships.

I am personally grateful that there were at least these responses. I am not confident that the majority of the Republican party has the strength and voice to stand against the revolution led by Rep. Cassidy and her ilk.

It is important to stress that we must not be motivated by hatred or animus. But we must be vigorous in standing for truth. We must oppose Rep. Cassidy’s ideas from a position of strength, based on the truth of God’s creation. We must speak clearly, not from a position of our righteousness or authority, but one of “thus saith the Lord.”

After you finish reading this article, would you please pray that God will change Rep. Cassidy’s heart and turn her away from the path of rebellion and judgment? Continue also to speak and stand for God’s truth. We must be doing what we can to raise opposition to the religious and legal revolution overtaking our state and much of our nation.
