When Obergefell was originally passed, it was championed as this win for “adult equality.” After all, it was marketed as homosexual couples just wanting the same legal benefits as heterosexual couples, such as tax breaks.

However, the consequences of the Obergefell decision were far more devastating for the family.

First, the Obergefell decision redefined and perverted the sacred meaning of marriage.

God authored and defined marriage as being a sacred, covenant union between one man and one woman.

“So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh.  And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. Then the man said, ‘This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.’ Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.” Genesis 2:21-25

The job of the government was never to define marriage because God had already defined it – it was to recognize it. Until Obergefell.

Second, the Obergefell decision victimized children.

When Obergefell passed, it not only rewrote martial law, it completely turned the tables and perverted parenthood law.

Because husbands and wives are now optional for marriage under Obergefell, mothers and fathers are now optional for parenthood.

For the past ten years, we have been first-hand witnesses of the harms that are done when children are intentionally deprived of their mother and father. A man cannot mother. A woman cannot father.

Every piece of research proves that children thrive in loving, nuclear homes.

This is why the Illinois Family Institute has officially partnered with the Greater Than Campaign, a national movement with the express goal of protecting children and overturning the devastating Obergefell decision.

“America’s children are being treated as less than. Less than adults’ ambitions. Less than political agendas. Less than the so-called ideals of “equality” and “freedom.” Their needs, their rights, their safety, their development—sometimes even their very existence—have been treated as secondary.

That time is over.

When marriage was redefined in 2015, parenthood was too. Once husbands and wives became optional, mothers and fathers became replaceable. But for a child, their mother and father are never optional, they are essential. Children need both a mother and a father to provide stability, guidance, and the unique love only a man and woman can give. No adult desire or ideology can change that.”

Children are always the un-consenting victims of the whims and desires of adults, and they need our protection.
