Abortion and the American Church

Abortion and the American Church

According to the 2025 State of Theology Survey conducted by Ligonier Ministries, a shocking 42% of Christians believe that abortion is not a sin. In addition to this, 9% of Christians are unsure about what God thinks about abortion.

What’s equally shocking about the lack of clarity toward abortion is the lack of a biblical worldview in general. Based on the fact that 100% of those surveyed claim that God’s Word is the highest authority, one must conclude that their Bibles are covered in dust.

This is scary.

If the Scriptures are the highest authority, why is there such a lack of clarity towards the evil of abortion?

Over the past couple of decades, a visible shift has taken place in our American churches.

Eric Metaxas’ Letter to the American Church, and Megan Basham’s Shepherds for Sale, shed light into just a bit of the moral shift that has happened in our places of worship.

Pastors have become more concerned about being “tolerant, loving and gentle” rather than preaching the whole counsel of God as they are duty-bound to do (Acts 20:27).

And that’s the tip of the iceberg.

In his 2022 survey administered to 1,000 pastors, Dr. George Barna, Director of Research for the Cultural Research Center at Arizona Christian University, found that only 37% of American pastors possess a biblical worldview. Does that mean that pastors aren’t reading the Word of God? Shockingly, it appears to be the case.

And the end result is a lack of knowledge and wisdom in Christians in things pertaining to God, His will, and His purposes.

In case there is any confusion, God’s Word is abundantly clear about what God thinks about the practice of abortion.

  • God tells Jeremiah that He knew him before the foundations of the world and set him apart to be a Prophet (Jeremiah 1:5).
  • David proclaims the mystery of the preborn baby being formed and designed in his mother’s womb by the Creator (Psalm 139:13-16).
  • God detested the practice of child sacrifice and forbade His people, Israel, from engaging in it (Leviticus 20:2-5).
  • Child sacrifice was one of the major catalysts of Israel being exiled to Assyria (2 Kings 17:17) and Judah’s exile into Babylon (Jeremiah 32:36).

First, if you are a pastor, called to shepherd and protect God’s flock, be bold about the proclamation of the Gospel in all its fullness no matter how “unpopular” it is.

Your church attendees need clarity.

Secondly, if you are a church member, leave your church if the pastor continues to walk the fence on these issues for the sake of not being “too forceful” or “too political.” Paul made it clear that to seek the approval of man and not God was the opposite of serving Christ (Galatians 1:10).

Finding a Bible believing church is not as difficult as you might think.

Finally, pray.

Our Lord, throughout His earthly ministry demonstrated through actions (Luke 5:16) and teaching (Matthew 6:9-13) that prayer is powerful. That the “prayer of a righteous person has great power” (James 5:16).

Pray the God would bring boldness and regeneration to our churches and repentance to the hearts of His people.

We are in desperate need of it.
