In a time of deep political division and declining trust in state and federal government, the news media, education, science and medicine, Americans should still be able to agree on one basic truth: only U.S. citizens should decide the outcome of U.S. elections. That principle isn’t radical. It isn’t partisan. It’s foundational.
That is why Congress should pass the SAVE America Act, legislation introduced by U.S. Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) and U.S. Representative Chip Roy (R-TX) in Congress. This commonsense bill restores clarity, accountability, and confidence in federal elections by requiring proof of citizenship to register and photo identification to vote. Illinois Congresswoman Mary Miller was quick to sign on as a cosponsor for this new legislation (H.R. 7296). The other two Repubican Congressman, Darin LaHood and Mike Bost are also planning to co-sponsors this new version, just as they did the previous SAVE Act.
If Americans cannot trust that their elections are secure, lawful, and fair, then the legitimacy of self-government itself begins to erode.
What the SAVE America Act Does
The SAVE America Act is straightforward and reasonable. It would:
- Require voters to present a valid photo ID when voting in federal elections
- Require proof of U.S. citizenship when registering to vote in person
- Require states to identify and remove non-citizens from voter rolls
These measures do not restrict lawful voters. They protect lawful voters by ensuring that every legitimate vote is not diluted or canceled out by illegal participation.
We already require identification to board an airplane, buy a firearm, or open a bank account. Yet in some states, a person can register to vote in federal elections without proving they are even a citizen. That is indefensible.
Take ACTION: Click HERE to send a message to U.S. Senators Dick Durbin, Tammy Duckworth and your local U.S. Representative asking them to support election integrity by voting in favor of the SAVE America Act. This legislation would provide reasonable safeguards that ensures only eligible citizens are added to voter rolls.
Carol Davis, chairman of Illinois Conservative Union, has been fighting for fair and honest elections for over a decade now. She enthusatstically supports this federal legislation, saying:
The SAVE America Act (H.R. 7296) incorporates the “good” found in the original S.A.V.E. Act and adds features that make it even better. The original legislation was narrowly focused on ensuring that non-citizens were not registering to vote or voting. The new Act mandates the presentation of a valid photo ID when registering and voting, which approximately 80% of all Americans support. While more can be done to ensure transparent and honest elections, the SAVE America Act is a very big step forward. This is “must-pass” legislation.
Why This Is Necessary — Not Theoretical
Opponents of election-integrity measures often dismiss concerns as “conspiracy theories” or claim that illegal voting is too rare to matter. But recent evidence tells a different story.
Investigative analysis of the 2020 election in Fulton County, Georgia — one of the most scrutinized elections in American history — has revealed serious discrepancies in official election records, including mismatches between ballot images, vote tallies, and chain-of-custody documentation. These findings, drawn from public records, point to systemic weaknesses in verification and recordkeeping — weaknesses that undermine public confidence even when no criminal intent is proven.
At the same time, states that have taken voter-roll maintenance seriously are uncovering actual cases of illegal voting, including non-citizens casting ballots in federal elections and individuals voting despite being legally ineligible. As voter rolls are audited and cleaned, these cases are increasingly coming to light — not as speculation, but as documented violations of the law.
Even if such cases represent a small percentage of total votes, they still matter. Illegal voting is illegal — not because of scale, but because of principle. A single unlawful vote cancels out the lawful vote of an American citizen.
A system that cannot confidently verify eligibility invites abuse, fuels suspicion, and damages trust — regardless of party.
This Is Not Suppression — It’s Sovereignty
Leftwing partisans continue to claim that requiring ID or proof of citizenship is “voter suppression” and even “racist.” Those claims collapses under even modest scrutiny.
Every sovereign nation on earth restricts voting to its citizens. No one argues that non-citizens should vote in Canadian, British, or French elections. Requiring proof of eligibility is not discrimination — it is the very definition of a fair and orderly election.
Public opinion data suggests that voter ID is not widely viewed as racist, with broad support across racial and political lines. ccording to recent CNN polling cited across multiple sources, 83% of Americans overall support requiring a photo ID to vote, including 85% of white, 82% of Latino, and 76% of black Americans. This undermines claims that such laws are uniquely burdensome or discriminatory toward minority groups.
The real injustice is telling Americans that their votes are cancelled by individuals who are not legally entitled to participate — and then refusing to fix the system.
Integrity
The Webster 1828 dictionary defines “integrity” as
1. Wholeness; entireness; unbroken state. The constitution of the U.States guaranties to each state the integrity of its territories. The contracting parties guarantied the integrity of the empire.
2. The entire, unimpaired state of any thing, particularly of the mind; moral soundness or purity; incorruptness; uprightness; honesty. integrity comprehends the whole moral character, but has a special reference to uprightness in mutual dealings, transfers of property, and agencies for others.
We cannot compromise on election integrity because free, fair, and secure elections are the very foundation of our constitutional republic — without confidence in the process, the legitimacy of every public officeholder is cast into doubt and public trust erodes. When the rules that govern voting are weak, unclear, or unenforced, it not only invites real threats to the accuracy of our outcomes, but it also undermines the principle that every lawful citizen’s voice should count equally and be protected.
The SAVE America Act offers Congress an opportunity to act responsibly, transparently, and courageously — not to advantage one party, but to restore trust in the process itself.
If citizenship matters—if the rule of law matters—if every lawful American vote deserves equal weight—then we must support the SAVE America Act in prayer, in word, and in deed. Fidelity to the U.S. Constitution requires action, not apathy, to preserve the precious gift of self-government entrusted to us by God.
Only American citizens should decide America’s future. Congress should pass the SAVE America Act — and do so without apology.
