We need you to speak out yet again!
If the General Assembly fails to pass the budget by May 31st, it requires a three-fifths majority in both the House and the Senate for approval. This higher threshold can make passing the budget more challenging.
But Illinois has bigger problems…
A common legislative strategy involves introducing identical bills in both the House and Senate. The physician assisted-suicide bills, SB 9 and HB 1328, clearly illustrate this tactic. When one bill, such as SB 9, stalls, the parallel version (HB 1328 in this case) can be restarted with the hopes of gaining traction.
Proponents of assisted suicide held a subject-matter hearing* in the Illinois House Executive Committee on Friday, May 14, 2025.
The nation-wide agenda to legalize lethal drugs for those under a doctor’s care reflects a significant shift in perspective regarding the value of human life. It is not surprising that it has come to Illinois.
Assisted suicide is sold to the public as a form of compassion — yet another inversion of reality.
In practice, it is anything but.
The trouble is, the promised reservation of assisted suicide to the chronically ill and elderly seems somehow always to get expanded to include those with disabilities, depression and mental illness.
The “right to die” morphs into the “duty to die.”
As foundational principles are challenged, it becomes imperative for us to voice our concerns and actively work to support the inherent worth of every individual. The well-being of our children and grandchildren hinges on our commitment to upholding the uniqueness and sanctity of all human life as a core value.
For generations, the medical community has served as a trusted source of healing. While acknowledging that not all medical professionals strictly adhere to the Hippocratic Oath, the commitment to its principles is a primary motivation for most in the profession.
We are deeply grateful for the members of the Illinois State Medical Society who voted in April to oppose physician-assisted suicide.
TAKE ACTION: Please click HERE to email your state representative. Urge him/her to oppose physician-assisted suicide – HB 1328.
If this bill reaches the House floor, it is crucial to inform your representative of the Illinois State Medical Society’s opposition to physician-assisted suicide and urge them to do the same.
Let your state lawmakers know that the State of Illinois should never approve of suicide under any condition. Even under the sanest and most reasonable of governments, state-sanctioned euthanasia is not just inherently wrong, it is obscene.
*A “subject matter hearing” refers to a public or committee hearing focused on proposed legislation within the committee’s jurisdiction. These hearings serve to gather information from experts, stakeholders, and the public; evaluate the merits and potential impacts of related bills, including the need for amendments; and help legislators develop informed policies through in-depth discussion of the subject matter. These hearings are open to the public.
THANK YOU!
