If you are on social media at all, you may have seen Candace Owens’ teaser trailer for her upcoming series, “Bride of Charlie,” a proposed “investigative series” into who the “real” Erika Kirk is that is set to debut on February 25th.

Despite how “legitimate” this series may be packaged, do not be fooled.

This series is none other than malicious gossip, slander, libel, character defamation, and ungodly conduct against a widow and her children.

In typical Candace Owens fashion, she hides behind the claim of “I’m not accusing. I’m just asking questions.” If she had facts, she wouldn’t need to ask questions.

The trailer’s tone and mood is not one of innocent, genuine journalism. It is a pointed attack against Erika’s character and Charlie Kirk’s legacy.

Because I don’t want to add more fuel to the fire that is gossip, I won’t go into any details of what the so-called “investigative series” is “investigating.”

The Epistle of James is abundantly clear about the danger and harm that the tongue can do. The tongue is likened to a small fire that is able to burn down an entire forest. We only need to think of the recent California fires to have an accurate image of its symbolism.

James 3:7-8 gives the intense warning that believers must heed:

“For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by mankind, but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.”

It has been extremely depressing to see so many Christians across social media ignore this warning from Scripture and completely give themselves over to the conspiratorial gossip that Candace Owens and others feed.

Women have a particular bent towards the sins of gossip and slander, and many view these as “innocent sins.” But God’s Word says differently (Romans 1:29-32).

Alisa Childers, a Christian author, podcaster, and Christian apologist, recently posted this on her social media accounts:

“… God Himself is a ‘protector of widows.’ (Psalm 68:5) and part of what it means to do justice as a Christian is to defend and care for widows. (Isaiah 1:17; Jeremiah 22:3; James 1:27). If you are a Christian woman caught up in this, I tell you with love as a sister in Christ, you need to repent.”

One of the marks of a true believer is obedience to God’s Word. Candace Owens’ conduct and speech over the past six months seriously draws into question her claim to Christianity.

God has much more to say about our what’s in our hearts and to guard them from speaking evil.

“The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.” (Luke 6:45)

“Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.” (Ephesians 4:29)

“But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person.” (Matthew 15:18)

Christians are called to avoid idle speculation and myths (1 Timothy 1:4). This so-called “investigative series” appears to do little more than fuel gossip and slander — seemingly for Candace’s own personal financial gain.

Scripture also instructs us to exercise discernment.

“Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God” (1 John 4:1).

Truth matters, because “a faithful witness does not lie, but a false witness pours out lies” (Proverbs 14:5). And we are clearly warned:

“You shall not go about as a talebearer among your people” (Leviticus 19:16).

Christians should have no part in this “investigative series” which fans the flames of gossip and slander.

There is no good that comes from defiling or slandering Charlie and Erika Kirk.

Believers must completely boycott this documentary.
