Psychedelics May Be Next

Almost daily on the way to and from work, I can smell marijuana emanating from the car in front of me. We don’t have enough people smoking weed while driving; now they’ll be hallucinating if SB 2772 becomes law.

Big Marijuana has saturated our state. Cannabis retailers moved a record amount of marijuana in 2025 with $1.5 billion in sales, down from $1.7 billion the year prior. The disparity in revenue is blamed on price compression, due to an over-saturation of marijuana products.

Although daily marijuana consumption has now surpassed daily alcohol consumption, several Illinois lawmakers hope to further expand the drug culture in Illinois with psychedelics to treat mental health conditions.

And SB 2772 is how they plan to succeed.

SB 2772, in a nutshell, creates an appointed board to determine whether to legalize entheogens, also known as psychedelic drugs. Once legal, “facilitators” will provide the drugs to users to treat certain mental health conditions in “administrative sessions” in state-sponsored service centers.

And there you have it. It’s for health purposes. This is right out of the “Medical Marijuana” playbook, which was right out of the “Big Tobacco” playbook.

If you were born in the 40’s or 50’s, you remember seeing the commercials that said smoking was good for your health. Tobacco companies even used doctors to promote their products. And of course, in order to legalize marijuana for recreational use, they first had to claim it was medicine.

TAKE ACTION: Click HERE to email your state representative. It’s already passed out of the Senate by a vote of 41 to 13. Urge him/her to reject SB 2772 and all bills that decriminalize and legalize any additional Schedule 1 Drugs. Tell them families are suffering enough already as a result of the foolish legalization of marijuana and the lack of enforcement of other highly addictive drugs. Tell your lawmakers that it’s their job to pass laws that strengthen families, not tear them down.

What’s an Entheogen?

Entheogens are Schedule I Drugs that have a high potential for abuse, with no current medical benefit and lack of accepted safety under medical supervision. Entheogens listed in SB 2772 are psilocybin – the hallucinogen in magic mushrooms, dimethyltryptamine, ibogaine, mescaline, methylenedioxymethamphet-
amine (ecstasy/molly), ayahuasca and LSD.

From Wikipedia: “Entheogens are psychoactive substances that induce alterations in perception, mood, consciousness, cognition, or behavior for the purposes of engendering spiritual development or otherwise in sacred contexts. Anthropological study has established that entheogens are used for religious, magical, shamanic, or spiritual purposes in many parts of the world.”

Under SB 2772, “facilitators” will provide hallucinogenic drugs to people “who use or may use drugs” during “administrative sessions” in state-sanctioned service centers.

“’Administrative session’” means a structured session held under the direct supervision of a licensed facilitator where a client consumes and experiences the effects of a psilocybin product.”

“’Facilitator’” means an individual who facilitates the provision of a psilocybin service in this State.”

“Facilitators” don’t have to be in the medical field according to SB 2772, but they should have:

“skills that are affirming, nonjudgmental, nondirective, trauma-informed, and rooted in informed consent.”

These state-sponsored service centers will be administering dangerous Schedule I Drugs in “administrative sessions” to treat mental illnesses by someone who is not necessarily a medical professional, but rather one who facilitates.

To make the case that psychedelics are safe for the purpose of legalization, SB 2272 states:

“research conducted by domestic and international medical institutions indicate that, when used with appropriate treatment protocols, psilocybin can be efficacious and safe for the treatment of a variety of mental health conditions, including … depression …” and several others.

However, on July 30, 2025, JAMA Network Open (ranked 15 out of 172 medical journals), reported that in 17 acute-phase randomized trials of psilocybin, patients receiving control treatments in psilocybin trials had significantly worse depression outcomes compared with those receiving other control treatments.

SB 2772 claims hallucinogens will help treat certain mental health conditions including treatment-resistant depression, anxiety, PTSD, substance abuse disorder, and end-of-life psychological distress.

The sponsors of SB 2772 want to legalize dangerous drugs with a high potential for abuse to treat substance abuse. This really makes no sense.

Furthermore, after recently legalizing physician-assisted suicide, do they propose to use dangerous Schedule I Drugs to help people not end their lives or is it to help them with the distress they feel from their suicidal thoughts? It’s unclear.

Entheogens are psychedelics most often used in spiritual rituals. This raises an important question. Are lawmakers proposing state-sponsored New Age religious facilities?

This is wrong on so many fronts. How can allowing mind-altering drugs to be easily made available ever be a good thing? Shame on lawmakers whose job it is to protect its citizens and do what’s best to help families flourish!

Moreover, what message are they sending to the children and families of Illinois? Say “yes” to drugs? Say “yes” to addiction and a life of mediocrity? That’s the message we are hearing.

Based on the many attempts to legalize other Schedule 1 Drugs over recent years, the intention of SB 2772 may be revealed here:

“In order to transition away from criminalization models while protecting people who use or may use drugs …”

Scripture is clear that when we disobey God’s plan for His creation, we open the door to demonic activity. It’s much better NOT to open that door.

“Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” 1 Peter 5:8-10

“…if you refuse to do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires you, but you must master it.” Genesis 4:7

“…you are slaves to the one you obey, whether you are slaves to sin leading to death, or to obedience leading to righteousness.” Romans 6:16

“Therefore, do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its desires.” Romans 6:12
