Session 3: The Wars of Islam
Written By David E. Smith   |   11.12.25

In this session, Josh Blair explores 1,400 years of conflict and confrontation between Islam and Christendom — history that continues to shape the modern world. The speaker emphasizes that while Islam is a socio-political system of conquest, Muslims as people are loved by Christ and need the Gospel.

After reviewing Islam’s origins and Muhammad’s shift from peaceful preaching to military jihad, the lesson traces the rapid spread of Islamic conquest across historically Christian lands — including Jerusalem, Antioch, Alexandria, and North Africa — using terror, slavery, and forced conversion as tools of domination.

Several decisive battles are highlighted as powerful examples of Christian courage in the face of overwhelming aggression:

  • Battle of Yarmouk (636): The Byzantine defeat opened the floodgates for Islamic expansion.

  • Fall of Spain & Reconquista: A tiny remnant in the mountains under Pelagius resisted and eventually reclaimed Spain after 800 years.

  • Battle of Tours (732): Charles Martel stopped Islamic forces from conquering Europe.

  • Crusades: Misrepresented today, the first crusade was launched to defend persecuted Christians and reclaim desecrated holy lands.

  • Fall of Constantinople (1453): A catastrophic turning point caused by Christian disunity.

  • Vienna (1683): A last-stand victory that halted Islamic conquest into Western Europe.

The session concludes by warning that this same ideological struggle continues today — from global terrorism to increasing Islamic influence in the West — and urges Christians to stand firm, unite, and boldly share the Gospel, remembering that God delights in using small, faithful armies to achieve His purposes.
