Summer is almost over. We know this for three reasons. One, Labor Day is at hand—the last of the “summer” holidays. Two, most schools are back in session. Thirdly, and joyously for many of us, college and pro football seasons are ready to kick off.
Not everyone is thororghly pleased with that third reason. Millions of wives have that frowny face on. All those players who were told they didn’t make the team are feeling in the dumps. And those players who did make the team but grumble they aren’t paid enough also have the sour puss face.
Count Baker Mayfield, quarterback of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, among them. Poor soul. He thinks as a “franchise” quarterback he’s worth a LOT more than he’s being paid. He wants to be in the $50 million a year QB Club. He represents a short list who feel the same.
Who’s in that elite club? There are 12 quarterbacks currently with deals worth more than $50 million annually. King of that pack is Patrick Mahomes. This Kansas City Chiefs QB recently received an extension worth $64 million a year! He is now the game’s highest paid player. Josh Allen of the Buffalo Bills is next at $55 million.
“Sadly,” as has been widely reported, Baker Mayfield feels disrespected. Under appreciated. And is threatening to leave the team when his contract permits.
Since we are coming up on Labor Day—known for blessing the whole idea of organized labor—the National Football League has their group always lobbying for more benefits as well. How special.
Oh I know pro sports is a risky business. Injuries—including concussions— can quickly shorten or end a career. And not everyone gets the really big payday.
But is it death-defying work? Or even life-preserving? Hardly.
Think of our military men and women. Several of whom have lost their lives this year. They put it all on the line for us who sit and yell at the boob tube watching Baker and Company at work.
And what about the first responders—police and fire fighters who run into danger while most of us run from it? Do you hear them crying in their beer about disrespect and lack of appreciation? Never. Consider what they are paid for saving lives.
Both my wife and I are only alive today because of the gifted and skilled hands of surgeons. For me, it was a thoracic surgeon who provided my five-way bypass when I was 53. After my angiogram, my cardiologist said to my beloved Rhonda that he wasn’t even sure how I made it into the hospital! Now it’s been 21years. Thanks be to God and that surgeon!
My wife Rhonda has been through TWO cancer surgeries. Untreated, both would (or could) have had terminal consequences. I could never repay them for their superb life-saving work.
These specialists do this every day. Saving lives across our nation. Many of them are paid well. Mid-career professional heart surgeons make an average of $400,000-$550,000 a year. A far cry from $50 million for throwing footballs.
Have you or a family member had a life-saving surgery? Or have you been rescued by first responders? What was that worth to you?
I watch sideline sports analysts on programs like NFL Live try to explain why player salaries are “worth every penny.” This reveals how totally out of balance in our thinking we’ve become.
Now let’s get real serious. Regardless of your allotted time on earth, it’s going to end one day. An unknown timetable.
The One who created the universe is the same Almighty who gave you life. He makes an offer to extend your existence into eternity. (Or “forever” for those of you in Rio Linda, California)
God’s offer is only good while you’re alive. And the offer comes by accepting His pathway of forgiveness of sin through the sacrifice of one man: Jesus Christ. Aside from my mention here, who has shared this vital message with you? They blessed you with eternal hope!
What is the worth of that person—be it a pastor, ministry leader, or friend? Most likely it’s someone who didn’t do it for money. Or recognition. Or appreciation.
They did it out of love. Because you are worth it. And never forget it.
