Disability Advocates Sound the Alarm on Illinois’ Assisted Suicide Bill

The WTTW segment covers the heated debate over Illinois’ proposed assisted suicided bill, which has passed the Illinois General Assembly and now awaits Governor JB Pritzker’s decision. Proponents of this death treatment, including the ACLU’s Kade Bennett, argue the bill offers terminally ill patients a compassionate option to avoid suffering.

Opponents, represented by Amber Smock of Access Living, warn the bill poses grave risks to people with disabilities and low-income individuals. She cites longstanding medical bias against disabled patients, unreliable prognosis timelines, and troubling examples — including insurance companies steering patients toward cheaper lethal drugs instead of treatment.

She also warns of a slippery slope similar to Canada’s expansion of assisted death, insisting the law could easily be broadened through future amendments.

The discussion highlights a fundamental clash between claims of “bodily autonomy” and concerns for vulnerable populations who may be pressured—explicitly or implicitly—toward ending their lives.

Take ACTION: Please pray that God would bring this dangerous agenda to a halt in Illinois. Ask the Lord to convict the heart and mind of Governor Pritzker — that he would see the grave consequences of normalizing suicide and refuse to sign SB 1950 into law. May God stir his conscience, overwhelm him with truth, and lead him to protect every vulnerable life in our state.

More ACTION: Please click HERE to email Governor JB Pritzker today and urge him to veto SB 1950. Tell him Illinois must protect the vulnerable — not promote assisted suicide as a so-called “solution.”
