Can you name the famed characters of Looney Tunes?

Elmer Fudd, Daffy Duck, Barnyard Dawg, Foghorn Leghorn, Sylvester, Yosemite Sam, Porky Pig, etc. And a personal favorite…Bugs Bunny.

Their antics were crazy. Even…looney.

The word “looney” has an ample number of synonyms. Silly. Stupid. Crazy. Even the softer “strange.”

Our world is rampant today with looney-ness. (My own word.)

Let me start with the evening news. Most nights I don’t. It’s depressing. Not just because of tragic occurrences in our society. We expect that to happen.

Beyond that, it is the parade of nonsensical approaches in reporting.

“Pride Month” is one example. Pride parades around the nation display bizarre examples of human depravity. Chicago media gives credence to these activities as “affirming people in their choices.”

Looney.

ABC Evening News recently covered Texas installing river buoys to control illegal migration flowing into our country. The reporting team saw the real “criminal” as the Texas governor! Even the President’s press secretary called his actions “inhumane.” The governor’s steps were taken because the federal government failed us in dealing with the issue. Yet ABC raised no concern over weak public policy. Not a peep.

Looney.

Meanwhile, Florida and Texas have decided to “share the wealth” and export troubled and weary migrants to other states. Including Illinois. Chicago media covered how the city needed to provide housing and benefits. Missing was the call for people to abide by laws governing immigration.

Looney.

Downtown San Francisco has gone to the dogs. Although I’m not sure even the dogs care to live there anymore. It’s too dirty.

Food and department stores are closing because of “shrinkage”— also known as rampant theft. People sleep and do their “business” on the city sidewalks. Drugs are easy as pie to get. And what do the citizens of the “city by the Bay” and all of California do? They re-elect the bozos who won’t fix the problems!

Looney.

(With the passing of Tony Bennett, maybe it’s time for a new version of his classic tune repositioned as, “I Left My Mind in San Francisco.”)

In Illinois, we have a new law abolishing cash bail! Depending on your view, this a great victory for “civil rights” against injustices in our legal system. Or… this new law passed by Democrats will “free from jail thousands of suspects accused of second-degree murder, kidnapping, burglary, robbery, and other violent crimes.”

Rather than fix the injustices, we let offenders go.

Looney.

Is there hope for change? Check this recent story from Newsweek: “Misgendering Should be a Crime, According to Millennials.” Newsweek commissioned the survey through Redfield & Wilton Strategies. They discovered that 44 percent of 25-34-year-olds think “referring to someone by the wrong gender pronoun (he/him, she/her) should be a criminal offense.” Only 31 percent disagreed.

And the balance? They neither agreed nor disagreed, or said they “didn’t know.”

In other words, clueless.

And how about that super movie weekend we now know as “Barbenheimer?” Two films received mega-hype on social media for opening on the same weekend in theaters. One, about the horror and moral dilemma involved in creating the atomic bomb. A truly world shaping event. The other, about a fictional Mattel doll who has issues.

Can you guess which film the sheep most flocked to? The doll house, of course! (Admittedly, the film Oppenheimer was viewed by a significant audience as well.)

Note that as we return to football and basketball seasons, stadiums once again will be packed. Baseball already has plenty of crowds. Wait, is COVID no longer a concern? Apparently not. A vaccine “expert” was recently “slammed for predicting ‘Barbenheimer’ would spark a COVID surge.”

We are a looney bunch.

Friend, what we most need is wisdom, understanding, and discernment for our daily lives. King Solomon knew this. He wrote,

“Get wisdom, get understanding; do not forget my words or turn away from them. Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you; love her, and she will watch over you. The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding. Cherish her, and she will exalt you; embrace her, and she will honor you. She will give you a garland to grace your head and present you with a glorious crown.” Proverbs 4:5-9 (NIV)

Timeless advice.

In the words of beloved (but looney) Porky Pig,

“That’s all, folks!”
