HB 4482: Protect Our Children, Defend the Truth

Detransitioners and courageous lawmakers across the country have been sounding the alarm about so-called “gender-affirming care” for minors. It is not compassionate medicine — it is irreversible harm inflicted on confused and vulnerable children by radical activists.

Young women like Prisha Mosley and Chloe Cole underwent life-altering procedures — including double mastectomies — while still minors. Today they speak openly about the devastating physical and psychological consequences: chronic pain, infertility, lifelong medical dependency, and profound regret. They testify that underlying mental health struggles were ignored while doctors rushed them down a path of puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and surgeries. That is not care. That is malpractice wrapped in ideology.

States are beginning to act. Tennessee’s SB 1, passed in 2023, prohibits puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and gender-transition surgeries for minors, allowing narrow exceptions for legitimate medical conditions such as precocious puberty. Despite threats from activist groups like the ACLU, lawmakers pressed forward — rightly prioritizing children over political pressure. Arkansas, Florida, Alabama, and Missouri have enacted similar protections, even as legal battles continue.

Here in Illinois, State Representative Bill Hauter, M.D. — the only medical doctor serving in the Illinois General Assembly — has introduced HB 4482 to prohibit gender-transition medical procedures on children. He is exactly right:

In light of major medical organizations’ stunning new admission that transgender surgeries on minors are not backed by strong evidence and should be delayed until adulthood, House Bill 4482 protects these vulnerable and confused children from the lies and harms of gender ideology in medicine.

Even major medical organizations are quietly shifting. The American Medical Association, which previously supported these radical interventions, now rightly acknowledges that evidence for surgical procedures on minors is weak and that such surgeries should generally be delayed until adulthood. That is a remarkable admission.

Most recently, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons has advised against gender-transition surgeries for minors, recommending that such irreversible procedures be delayed until at least age 19 due to insufficient evidence of long-term benefit and serious concerns about informed consent. Their guidance calls for heightened caution, stronger documentation, and sober medical judgment about whether a child can truly grasp the lifelong consequences of sterilization and mutilating surgeries.

Take ACTION: Click HERE to send an email to your state representative to urge them to support or even co-sponsor HB 4482. Ask them to stand on the side of truth, biology, and the protection of children. Tell them Illinois must not permit irreversible medical harm to be inflicted on confused and vulnerable minors.

  • Pray for State Representative Bill Hauter and for his colleagues in the General Assembly. Pray that hearts would be softened, that truth would prevail, and that our elected officials would have the courage to protect those who cannot protect themselves.
  • Follow up with calls, more emails and maybe even request a meeting. Bring a few like-minded friends or church leaders with you. Lawmakers need to see that faithful, informed citizens are paying attention.

We must uphold the truth. God created us male and female. That is not fluid. It is not negotiable. Biology affirms it. Our chromosomes and our DNA testify to it.

Bottom Line: Children must never be permitted to “consent” to irreversible harm. No responsible adult would allow healthy body parts to be removed in the name of compassion. Medicine must never bow to radical political ideology.

As an important side note, the U.S. Supreme Court in a 6-3 decision, has upheld the constitutionality of the Tennessee’s ban, with implications for similar laws nationwide. The case centers on whether such bans violate equal protection and due process rights or serve as necessary safeguards for minors. Similar bans have been enacted in states like Arkansas, Florida, Alabama, and Missouri.

Meanwhile, even major hospital systems are reevaluating their practices. Several Chicago-area institutions — including Northwestern Memorial, Lurie Children’s, UI Health, UChicago Medicine, and Rush University Medical Center — have paused or ended these irreversible surgeries on minors. Sutter Health in California has also announced it will stop performing gender-transition procedures on children.

The tide is turning. The evidence is weak, the risks are real, and children deserve protection. Your continued prayers are vital – as this is primarily a spiritual battle.

And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit,
which is the word of God;
praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit,
being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints…
