It’s not enough to know that we have the scientific ability to do something. We must also think about the moral significance of the thing we choose to do. The artificial reproduction technology known as IVF is no exception. If anything, it is the quintessential example; what may seem to be a miracle of science for infertile couples actually brings with it a host of moral complications.

What about accidental incest between married people who are the unknowing offspring of the same sperm donor? What about those who discard their embryo because they find out he/she has a genetic disorder? Is the procedure justified despite the risk of birth defects it can incur?
