SUMMARY:"First Do No Harm" Forum on Assisted Suicide
DESCRIPTION:Nine states and the District of Columbia have legalized assisted suicide\, with an additional state\, Montana\, allowing the practice in theory because of a court ruling. \nIllinois and several others are considering legalization. \nIf you’re unsure where you stand on this issue\, the strong words of warning from Dr. Madeline Li\, a physician who has “overseen” assisted suicide for hundreds of people in Canada\, should give you pause: \n“Making death too ready a solution disadvantages the most vulnerable people\, and actually lets society off the hook. I don’t think death should be society’s solution for its own failures.” \nPlease join us to learn about the consequences of legalizing assisted suicide\, why it puts your life at risk\, and the real reason healthcare exists in the first place. \nWHEN: Wednesday\, May 15\, 2024 \nWHERE: Belmont Bible Church\n                     5430 Belmont Rd\n                    Downers Grove\, IL \nTIME: 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM \nClick HERE for a flier. \nSpeakers \nDr. Stephen Smart graduated with a BS in chemical engineering (1984) and MD with honors from Washington University in St. Louis (1988). He completed residency in internal medicine at Barnes Hospital followed by a fellowship in allergy & immunology at the University of Iowa. \nDr. Smart then served 3 years active duty as teaching faculty at Wilford Hall US Air Force Medical Center in San Antonio with the rank of major before moving to Peoria\, Illinois in 1996. \nHe is a Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at University of Illinois College of Medicine and is currently in the private practice of allergy\, asthma\, and immunology\, having joined Springfield Clinic Peoria in 2021. \nHe has a special interest in medical ethics and is President of the Peoria-area Christian Medical and Dental Association. He is also Past President of the Peoria Medical Society and a past-Trustee of the Illinois State Medical Society. \nHe has spoken on issues ranging from stem cell research and transgender medicine to Christian approaches to politics. \nDr. Smart was born on the near-south side of Chicago; married 38 years to Kate Smart; they have 8 children\, including 4 who were adopted. \nDr. Ben German is an internist practicing primary care on the west side of Chicago. He serves primarily indigent patients at a federally qualified health center. He is an Illinois representative with the American Academy of Medical Ethics\, a biomedical advocacy arm of the Christian Medical and Dental Association. \nHe is proudly married to Andrea\, and together\, they are raising two children. He views his Christian faith as the basis for everything he does\, including medical practice. \n>>Click HERE for an event flyer!<<
