Banned Books High School Update

Why isn't the ALA's outraged over censorship of conservative resources on the topic of "sexual orientation?"

In light of the American Library Association's (ALA) annual self-righteous and hypocritical "Banned Books Week" witch hunt, Illinois Family Institute (IFI)has been exposing the dirty little public high school censorship secret. We've chosen to expose the untenable and embarrassing censorship of conservative resources on the topic of "sexual orientation" because this is the subject that is most comprehensively censored by public school political activists -- I mean librarians.

Evidence of widespread liberal censorship of conservative views on myriad topics is easy to find, but no topic suffers at the hands of liberal book banners as egregiously as the topic of "sexual orientation." IFI has so far exposed the censorship that corrupts the library book collection of one of Illinois' most prestigious public high schools: Deerfield High School.

But it's not just Deerfield High School that bans books. Illinois Family Institute's Division of School Advocacy has learned that yet another prestigious high school on Chicago's North Shore, New Trier Township High School, apparently censors conservative resources on homosexuality and "transgenderism."

New Trier's library carries approximately ten books that include both liberal and conservative perspectives on homosexuality and "transgenderism." These are books from series that are commonly used for debate (e.g. Opposing Viewpoints, Issues in Focus).

Of the remaining dozens upon dozens of books that embody, reflect, or espouse a singular perspective, there are at least 120, including both fiction and non-fiction, that espouse liberal views, and none that espouse conservative perspectives.

In addition, there appear to be at least 20 video-recordings that espouse liberal views, and once again none that espouse conservative views.

Someone really ought to tell public school librarians that their bias is showing.

There are many ways to determine whether the viewpoint of an author is conservative or liberal. The presence of the following ideas or images in a book, play, or film indicates that the resource is liberal:
  • the view that homosexuals are denied basic rights

  • the view that same-sex marriage is a civil right

  • the view that same-sex marriage should be legalized

  • the idea that same-sex marriage will not harm society

  • the idea that same-sex marriage is morally equivalent to heterosexual marriage

  • the idea that homosexual attraction is biologically determined

  • the idea that there is no such being as an "ex-gay"

  • the idea that disapproval of homosexual conduct is equivalent to hatred (i.e. homophobia)

  • the idea that homosexuality is equivalent to race (a view that many racial groups find fallacious and deeply offensive)

  • the idea that disapproval of homosexual behavior is equivalent to racism

  • images of conservatives or Christians as hatemongers

  • emotional images of persecuted or harassed homosexual teens. (Of course, no student should be harassed, but these images are used to persuade people that expressions of principled moral objection to homosexuality lead inevitably to violence and therefore should be prohibited.)

  • accounts of historical persecution of homosexuals. (These are again used to conflate hatred and violence with conservative or traditional moral principles.)

  • positive images of homosexuality. (These are used to suggest that because homosexuals are, for example, funny, kind, creative, and smart, homosexuality must be morally legitimate. To be sure, those who self-identify as homosexual are as likely to be funny, kind, creative, and smart as anyone else, but being in possession of those positive characteristics tells us precisely nothing about the nature and morality of homosexuality.)
  • New Trier and Deerfield parents and other taxpayers should be deeply troubled by this untenable imbalance. IFI urges all those who are concerned about academic freedom and integrity to express your concerns about both the lack of commitment to intellectual diversity on the parts of library staff and faculty, and to the use of public funds to advance one side of a contentious public debate. Censorship and political advocacy have no place in publicly funded educational institutions.
