Emily Zender for Illinois Right to Life is speaking out against HB 4013, a bill that would remove all prohibitions on taxpayer funding of abortions.  In other words, this legislation would reverse the current law which bans taxpayer funding of abortion under Medicaid. See video below:

This bill also removes language rules of the Department of Healthcare and Family Services or the Department of Human Services that currently prohibits any physician from providing medical assistance to anyone eligible under the Code where such physician has been found guilty of performing an abortion procedure in a willful and wanton manner upon a woman who was not pregnant at the time such abortion procedure was performed.

In 1977, when the ban on taxpayer funding of abortion under Medicaid passed into law, there were over 12,700 abortions paid for under Public Aid’s Medicaid program with taxpayer dollars.  When the ban went into full affect after a June 1980 U.S. Supreme Court decision specifically upholding the Illinois Law, 22 abortions were paid for in 1981 with taxpayer dollars.

Since the Illinois ban on taxpayer funded abortions under the Public Aid Code was upheld by the U. S. Supreme Court in June 1980,  taxpayers have been spared from having to pay for thousands of abortions annually.
