Decency

This includes issues such as pornography, sexual perversion, sexually oriented businesses, and indecent radio and TV programming.

Our families are surrounded with the corruption of our culture. Everywhere we turn we are assaulted by obnoxious or pornographic images and messages. Grocery stores place outlandish magazines in checkout lines, forcing every man, woman and child to look at pictures that could only be described as pornographic. Revealing posters and mannequins in clothing stores market “hip” fashions that cost more, yet provide little material. Billboards advertisements for adult book stores or strip bars line our highways and ambush our families.

Yet perhaps the most prevalent and obvious problems are seen and heard on the TV and radio. MTV, Jerry Springer, Will and Grace, and Blind Dating are but some examples of the obscene offerings on the tube. Radio shock jocks like Howard Stern and Erich “Mancow” Muller flood the airwaves with sexually graphic material that only serves to degrade women. Years of inaction by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has resulted in what have termed the “race to the bottom” for programs that want to provide the public with the most outrageous, controversial shows.

The sexual assault of Janet Jackson by Justin Timberlake during the Super Bowl just 5 months ago stirred up a hornet’s nest. Americans were simply not going to be continually subjected to indecent, pornographic material – especially when there are laws against this kind of content.

IFI believes that Christians cannot abandon the public square to pornographers and shock jock. The harm done by these types of indecency and how it is influencing and educating generations of children about sex and relationships. IFI will lead in this effort for a decent and more wholesome environment.
