Prayer Alert: Primary Election, State & Federal Legislatures
By David E. Smith   |   03.18.24
Have you noticed how few campaign ads are running on radio and television? In some communities, it is hard not to notice that there are fewer campaign signs on parkways and lawns. And that is especially true in southern Illinois. In this Primary Election cycle there is a striking lack of competition for a majority of state legislative districts.
Wise as Serpents. Harmless as Doves.
Hard to believe is was four years ago when the dreaded COVID-19 virus scare virtually shut down America. You recall those days, right? Limited groups were allowed in stores. Schools were doing remote learning. Restaurants had restricted space or even outdoor-only seating. Family events were cancelled, including big weddings and farewell funeral gatherings.
Testing For Truth
I often wonder why I torture myself. Each weekday afternoon, I try to stay somewhat literate in what is happening in our world by watching the evening network news. Most every day, I regret it.
Christian, Do Your Duty: Vote!
By Rev. Thorin Anderson   |   03.15.24
Every American citizen has, among other things, the right and responsibility to vote. If too many fail to take this responsibility seriously, it allows for a few, with bad intentions, to transform the state into an oligarchy or dictatorship!
Why Should Anyone Homeschool? Part 1
By Ecce Verum   |   03.12.24
I've been blessed to write several dozen articles for IFI on topics ranging from transgender bathrooms to sports gambling to the politically correct concept of "ableism." It's been a very fun ride. But, peering back through it all—the rants on the artificial fertility lobby and the exposés of abortion politics, the laments over the modern denial of science and the abandonment of logic—I still think back to the very first article I ever wrote for the Institute: COVID Boosted Idea of Educational Freedom.
Climate Change or Just Left-Wing Indoctrination?
By David E. Smith   |   03.09.24
Last year I was at lunch with an evangelist. After the meal, he handed our waitress a Gospel tract. I wanted to reinforce his compassion, so I told the young lady that her relationship with God was the most important thing in the world. She responded, “Yeah, that and global warming!” She proceeded to tell us that she wakes up in fear of what may happen to the earth during her lifetime. I was shocked.
Israel and Hamas: No Middle Ground. Christians, Where Do You Stand?
By Rev. Thorin Anderson   |   03.02.24
America is divided, but you already knew that.  There is no place for coming together in many of its disagreements.  The differences are polar opposites, and neither side is willing to yield ground.  This presents a very serious, if not existential, threat to the nation.  Abraham Lincoln, quoting Jesus Christ noted that, “A nation divided against itself cannot stand.”
Sweep the Clouds Away
No doubt Elmo had good intentions. The Muppets have filled our homes with plenty of good laughs and good times over the years. The Muppet movies are worth investing the 90 minutes of time to watch the illustrious Kermit the Frog and friends seek a life of fame and fortune.
Here Come Da Judge!
The seemingly never ending efforts to keep Donald Trump from regaining a return to his temporary residence at the White House got personal in Illiinois this week. The Chicago Tribune alerted us that Cook County Judge Judge Tracie Porter has ruled that the former president should have his name struck from the March 19 Illinois Republican primary ballot.
Online Sports Gambling – Church Leaders Beware!
02.29.24
Pete Rose was the all-time hit leader in Major League Baseball. However, he was gambling on the sport while playing. In the wake of the Pete Rose gambling controversy, he was banned from baseball on August 24, 1989.
Leap of Faith
It’s here. Leap Day. A good thing if you need a day to catch up on things. Not as good if it means you have to work an extra day for your paycheck. Why the need for this extra day? So that our calendars can play catch up! For the Earth to orbit the sun, our planet actually takes 365.242190 days. You multiply that excess travel time and it yields up an extra day every four years. Or so we’re told.
A Christian Response to “Death with Dignity”
By Brandon Myers   |   02.27.24
The forces of darkness in Illinois want to take the state’s death agenda to the next level. Some deceived politicians have now introduced an assisted suicide—euphemistically referred to as a “Medical Aid in Dying” or “Death with Dignity”—bill in Springfield. A bill sponsored by Illinois Senator Linda Holmes (D-Aurora), SB 3499 creates the “End-of-Life Options for Terminally Ill Patients Act.”
“Three in One Flesh?”
By Ecce Verum   |   02.23.24
The "slippery slope" idea is sometimes a fallacy. But other times, it's simply the way the world works. Concerned conservative Christians—the ones who warned us that legalizing one sexual perversion would lead to another down the road—were right. Say hello to polyamory, 2024.
After School Satan Clubs – Has God Indeed Said?
By Calvin Lindstrom   |   02.22.24
Genesis 3 is part of the historical and foundation record of God’s Word. It is not a myth or fantastic story, but rather part of the amazing record God has given so that we might understand the world as it was first created as well as how that world has been spoiled by man’s sin and rebellion.
Just the Facts, Ma’am!
By Israel Wayne   |   02.21.24
“Just the facts, Ma’am.” In the 1950s, this phrase caught hold in our American vocabulary, inspired by the persona of Sergeant Joe Friday of the TV show, Dragnet. The no-nonsense police investigator reflected a concept (even if he never uttered the exact words that became so well established in pop-culture) embraced by the Modernist worldview.
